Taurus
May 1, 2009
“It’s May. It’s May. The lusty month of May. The time of year when everyone goes blissfully astray. .. ”
Probably Rogers and Hammerstein weren’t astrologers, but they were right on with their song from Camelot. May is the month of Taurus, the Bull (April 20-May 19), the most beautiful, sensual, and fertile month on Earth. Taurus is the flowering of Springtime and Taurus’ holiday—Beltane or May Day, as we call it—is a day of love-making festivals all around the world, revealing the Bull’s link with fertility. Many Taureans are proud of their love-making skills.
Sensuality is one of Taurus’ strongest assets. He is deeply in touch with his senses and his connection to the Earth. The Bull is stable, determined, and powerful. He is slow, beautiful, and indulgent. He reminds us that we miss the beauty of the Earth if we are always racing ahead. The statement “slow down and smell the roses” was no doubt first spoken by a Taurus.
Probably the creators of Earth Day weren’t astrologers either, and yet the day they chose, April 22, the Sun is in Taurus. And it is in this sign, the first earth sign, that we learn to love and appreciate the Earth. Our senses connect us to our Mother. As Taurus grounds the Aries spark of life, so too must we be grounded and connected to the Earth in a way that supports our bodies and spirits to flower. In Taurus we establish our values and self worth.
Ruled by Venus, Taurus is also the sign of beauty. Astrologer Stephanie Austin remarks that Venus is a fitting ruler for Taurus because of her association with both beauty and love, reminding us that beauty opens the heart. Taurus rules the land and the growth of vegetation. The Bull loves all things green, from the beautiful countryside (good farmers they are, green-thumbed) to the money that comes from its bounty (good bankers they are, counting greenbacks). Green-eyed envy is a Taurus shadow. Other shadows include gluttony, greed, laziness, and of course, his biggest shadow, stubbornness and the rage that follows if the Bull perceives he is being forced.
Astrologer Nancy Cohen says that baby Taurus is born in a family where money is an issue. The mother is worried, imprinting baby Taurus with a deep need for material security and stability. The Bull operates with a 30-second delay. Those with Mercury in Taurus can hardly get their words on paper, so cautious are they. But hating change, baby Taurus becomes a good and loyal marriage partner later in life.
Being the second sign, Taurus rules the neck and throat. Many too stubborn or unwilling to change will experience sore throats and stiff necks. Before you take out your child’s tonsils, find out what changes he is unhappy about. If you find yourself wearing a neck collar or brace, look inside to release some stubbornness. Here too is the dark realm of eating disorders, especially found in the afflicted Taurus Moon, where over-identification with form and deep insecurity meet. On the positive side, Taurus bestows the gift of beauty, especially the beautiful voice.
Expect aggressive behavior and impatience this month with both Venus and Mars traveling through Aries. Impulsive shoppers beware. And those that fall in love at the drop of a hat might find themselves in trouble because, as Skywatch astrologer Lance Ferguson points out, there will be many new hats this month. “While the Vegas wedding chapels will be busy, so will the divorce courts down the line. ” This is because Jupiter and Neptune are conjoining on the United States Moon clouding the picture with fogginess and illusion. Maybe you will find true love now, or maybe not. To add more confusion, Mercury turns retrograde on May 6th and will remain in backward motion until the 30th. Don’t make big decisions this month. Wait until June when the skies are clearer. The only days favorable for new beginnings this month are May 3rd, 4th, and 5th. May 26th and 27th are good days to plant seeds for the future. Remember no surgeries during the three days of the Full Moon.
The Full Scorpio Moon on May 8th highlights our deepest desires and our deepest fears. The opposition of Taurus and Scorpio are well illustrated by their holidays. Beltane—Mid-Spring Day—features fertility and love-making; Halloween and All Souls’ Day—Mid-Autumn Day—features ghosts, skeletons, and death. These powerful signs open and close our experience in the body. Now when the Sun is in Taurus and the Moon is in Scorpio is a time to meditate on the impermanence of human existence. It’s also a time to review our values and our relationship to money and resources. We may find at this lunation that slowing down and simplifying our needs (favorable Saturn aspect) could bring a new kind of wealth.
The New Gemini Moon on May 24th favors new and creative ideas and solutions. The Neptune-Jupiter conjunction is perfecting so those that are open to new ideas should meditate now. No action yet, however, since Mercury, Gemini’s ruling planet, is still in backward motion.
The Sabian symbol for this lunation at 4 degrees Gemini is “Holly and mistletoe bring Christmas spirit to a home. ” Mistletoe was sacred to the ancient Druids of Britain who believed it had magical and healing powers. Astrologer Lynda Hill says that the Druids believed that if enemies met beneath the mistletoe they would lay down their weapons, greet one another, and honor a 24 hour truce. This sounds like a good idea for all of us to practice today even there may be no actual mistletoe for us to meet under. The ripple effect could be powerful now.
