Capricorn

January 28, 2009

Top dog Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) is going to have to rethink his position this year. The opening day of Capricorn is the day of the Winter Solstice, a big enough deal on its own, especially as the Sun is only 3 degrees from Galactic Center and 1 degree Capricorn is crossing the Galactic Equator in December 2012, a time that has come to be called the shift. As if this isn’t enough, Pluto has just entered Capricorn for the first time in 250 years signaling a time of change and transformation of the Capricorn stuff—the big stuff. Pluto’s entry into Capricorn will end a wild time of expansion as Pluto traveled through big and fiery Sagittarius during the last 12 years.

This year Capricorns (and the rest of us) will begin to learn that beating everyone—something very important to the Mergoat, Capricorn’s mythic ruler—is nowhere. They will start to learn that the real triumph and the only one that finally counts is reached at the end of the journey on the inner road—the conquering of our own separated selves. The meaning of success—Capricorn is success—will also change. Success will be measured by how much you support others and give to life rather than how much you can get and how much you can pleasure yourself. The changes are already beginning. Listen to what astrologer Lance Ferguson has to say about this new year:

“The movie, the astrological landscape, has changed in 2009. We’ve left many miles and many gears of green pastures, fat retirement accounts, and rivers with blue water and big boats behind us in 2008. The Promised Land is in the rear view mirror. Now we head up into the hills. Up into the rocks and cool, steep ravines filled with cedar, uncertainty, and stunted pine trees. .. This is the kind of energy that Pluto in conservative, earth sign Capricorn brings to the set. And for the next 15 years, we will be challenged to make realistic and practical decisions up in this mountainous setting. Survival will grow more difficult. We will be tested. Values will change. ”

But Capricorn, you are tough. If anyone will make it, it will be you (perhaps joined by an adventuresome Aries). Remember Mergoat, your sign is the sign of the winner. It is also the sign of government and corporations, all of which will undergo radical change as Pluto brings devastation to hierarchical institutions that no longer serve. The big boys are already beginning to crumble, making way for the Age of Aquarius. Big Jupiter enters Aquarius this month, another energetic move into the Aquarian Age. Aquarius is the sign of equality, the sign of man. The water bearer pours his wisdom for all of us.

But back to Capricorn, the third and final earth sign where ideas received in fiery and spirited Sagittarius must be brought onto the earthly plane and put to the test of time. Capricorn is ruled by ringed Saturn, the cosmic task master and the Lord of Karma, reminding us that what we sow we reap. Saturn is the Grim Reaper, never letting us forget that we too, like all living things, will be reaped one day. Since Capricorn is the energy of time, often the little Capricorns look old, but these “old youngsters” stay younger looking than their brothers as they age.

The Mergoat is Capricorn’s mythic ruler. Most of us don’t notice that the Capricorn goat has the tail of a fish. This overlooked tail is what gives Capricorn the intuition to know which mountain to climb. Because climb they must. Winning is so important to the young or unevolved Capricorns that they might not play if they can’t win.

The Mergoats are the most ambitious in the zodiac. Theirs is the sign of recognition and achievement, reputation and fame. Since Capricorn bestows the gift of inner discipline of its own, long after others have gone home, the Capricorn is working, putting in that extra effort that ensures success. It is no wonder then that a great many of the world’s highest achievers are Capricorns. The sign of the Mergoat is the most prominent sign of Indian gurus. Other earthly kings such as Mohammed Ali, king of boxing and Elvis Presley, king of rock and roll, are notable Capricorns. Young top dog golfer Tiger Woods was born in this sign of the winner. Black leader Martin Luther King is a Mergoat, and he even has the name King. Jesus’ birthday was placed in Capricorn since he is the King of Kings. However, new research indicates that Jesus was born in late August at the Leo/Virgo cusp where the lion lays down with the lamb.

The shadow side of Capricorn is a dour seriousness sometimes seen in businessmen and the like. No time for play in the Capricorn’s day. And the Mergoat can be a superior fellow, looking down on others from his mountain perch. The darkest shadow of Capricorn is ruthlessness. Some will do anything to win. It doesn’t matter who is stepped on or eliminated along the way to the top. Richard Nixon was a Capricorn with his shadow side showing.

Our local psychological astrologer, Nancy Cohen, says the little Capricorns are born to mothers who are running the show but pretending that the father is. The child is in on the secret, giving him an adult edge and a quiet superiority.

Saturn hardens and defines so the Mergoat rules the skeleton, the teeth, the knees and the skin. Knees heal more slowly than other body parts since they are ruled by the Lord of Time. People with low self esteem often have skin problems as our skin separates us from everything else.

The best day this month to begin something you want to come to quick fruition is January 9th after 2:00 p. m. Other good days for new beginnings are the 1st, the 4th, and the morning of the 7th. New Year’s should be easy to keep this year. The best days to quit a bad habit are the 23rd and 24th. These are the dark moon days right before eclipse. Gone for good, you could say, as these stars are so positive for good riddance. But, please, no important new beginnings the week around the Solar Eclipse of January 25th. Your plans, like the Sun, could also be eclipsed. No surgeries the 9th, 10th, or 11th.

Mercury turns retrograde on the 11th and travels backward all month, stationing on January 31st. This is not the time for purchases, especially of cars or electronics. Read contracts with extra care.

The Full Moon on January 10th is another charged-up moon, this time in the mothering, nurturing sign of Cancer. Feelings run strong and people will feel extra protective as well as more patriotic. The opposing Sun is in, of course, strict and harsher Capricorn. Issues of leniency versus strictness, the soft touch or the tough one, inner needs versus outer responsibility could be up. Since Cancer and Capricorn are the signs of the parents, Mom and Dad could be at a stand-off this weekend. Dad will yell and Mom will cry. However an unusual formation accompanies this lunation called a mystic rectangle, helping us to see alternatives and implement changes. Mercury retrograde the following day asks you to rethink and reimagine your place in your family and in the new world.

By the time of the New Moon on January 25th, the Sun will have moved into progressive Aquarius. Big Jupiter is nearby, amping up the Aquarian vibe. This lunation is a Solar Eclipse at 7degrees Aquarius. The Sabian symbol is this: A child is seen being born out of an egg; the emergence of new mutations according to the great rhythms of the cosmos. How appropriate that this New Moon Eclipse follows the inauguration of our new president. Look inside now for your new direction as times change. As we stand “facing a dying nation, that moving paper fantasy” (Hair) is finally starting to crumble.
