Sagittarius

December 1, 2008

“Take me out to the ballgame. Take me out with the crowd. .. ” The light-hearted fun this old song brings to mind is the buoyancy and joy of Sagittarius, the ninth, the luckiest, and the most fun sign of the zodiac. (November 21 – December 21). Most of the good stuff of life is somehow crowded into this sign of friendliness, tolerance, and optimism. From sports events to foreign travel to finding God, the Sagittarius life moves from surface play to deep discovery.

Many living enviable lives are Sagittarians: the professional athlete, the professor, the traveler, the philosopher, the attorney. The Sagittarian professions are fiery, requiring lots of enthusiasm, lots of energy, powerful focus, and hopefulness. The Sagittarian virtues of generosity, fair-mindedness, and friendliness have much to do with the successful lives of these celestial adventurers.

Like the archer aiming toward the bull’s eye, Sagittarians are direct in their communication. They always have an opinion which they are more than willing to share, and which they are certain is right on target. Sagittarians are high minded people with the passion and power of the horse. Since Sagittarius is a double sign, half man and half horse, its natives are torn between the party and the retreat. But since this is the sign of the truth seeker, most Sagittarians will turn toward the higher path sooner or later.

Sagittarian energy travels far. The archer is goal oriented, pointing his arrow at 27 degrees Sagittarius, Galactic Center, where waves of information are pouring forth. The centaur wants to expand, seeking truth and new territory. Most Sagittarians love travel, and many live some of their life in a foreign country. This gives them that larger perspective which increases tolerance.

Sagittarian energy travels fast. The race horse is the epitome of this fiery energy of speed with purpose. That running back, streaking toward the goal line is Sagittarius. So is the fast-talking attorney whose goal it is to convince and persuade. The gambler winning big and fast and then losing just as quickly is also Sagittarius.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and like their ruling planet, Sagittarians are often larger than life people. The more evolved Centaurs are big in spirit and strong in faith, often displaying generosity and forgiveness more easily than others. Somewhere, Sagittarians know that giving and receiving are the same. How appropriate that Thanksgiving is the Sagittarian holiday. This is a Sagittarian secret: gratitude increases abundance.

Famous Sagittarians include baseball star Doe DiMaggio, witty and philosophical actor Woody Allen, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, philosophical and thought-provoking author of The Last Temptation of Christ, Nikos Kazantzakis, as well as the powerful and popular teen-age star Miley Cyrus, born Destiny Hope, a Sagittarian name if there ever was one!

Shadow Sagittarius is the preacher, certain his way is right. It is the friend who tells you what he thinks of you, even if you don’t ask. Challenged, Sagittarius is surprised that others might not be interested in his version of the way it is. Darker shadows are the compulsive gambler who destroys his family’s resources and the religious zealot who is willing to destroy others who don’t accept his truth.

Pluto has been traveling through Sagittarius since the mid nineties, challenging all of us, but especially it’s natives to transform their belief systems. The Iraq War, with its religious overtones, is a manifestation of Pluto’s destructive power, fueled by Sagittarian fanaticism, both sides being certain that their God is right. Last week Pluto moved into Capricorn and we are hearing the first talks of withdrawal of troops.

Sagittarius is the third and last fire sign. Aries, the first sign of fire, is the spark of life and all new beginnings; Leo, the second sign, is the fire of the heat, the fire of love; Sagittarius, the third fire sign, is the blue fire of the spreading flame, rushing across surfaces. An example: A spark starts the forest fire (Aries), the fire burns in its magnificent beauty and heat and powerful destruction (Leo), the fire is spread by embers rising on the wind (Sagittarius).

Sagittarius, being under the rulership of big Jupiter, appropriately rules the larger body parts, the hips and thighs. The femur or thigh bone is the largest in the body. Here is where red blood cells (metaphysical symbols of joy and happiness) are made deep within the marrow. And it is the hips and thighs that propel us forward and into the future. Thoughts of restriction and confinement often make hip pain. Seniors who see no future often fall and break a hip. “Hip, hip, hooray. There is joy in everyday, ” is healing guru Louise Hay’s affirmation for hip problems.

December opens up with a strong impulse toward adventure. From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, all planets are moving forward for the first time this year. This is a cosmic full speed ahead. The shadow side of the situation is recklessness and over-confidence in your opinion. Astrologer Jeff Jawer warns that by December 10th, “risks of going too far too fast can be dramatic. ” Look for explosive events between the 10th and 15th as an extraordinary series of aspects marks the first trigger of the radical opposition occurring over the next two years between Saturn (the old) and Uranus( the new). Problems involving excesses of authority could arise around the solstice, December 21st and continue through December 28th.

December 2nd and 3rd as well the afternoon of the 8th are favorable for new beginnings. The 29th and 30th are also good. No surgeries between the 10th and 15th. December 26th is the best day for getting rid of things.

The Full Moon on December 12th is the final Supermoon of the year. In addition the Sun in Sagittarius and the Moon in Gemini form a powerful grand cross with Saturn (physical reality) and Uranus (metaphysical reality). “The Sun in Sagittarius illuminates what we need to see; the Moon in Gemini, what we need to say. Saturn in Virgo exposes what no longer works, and Uranus in Pisces reveals where we are ready for a quantum leap. ” (Astrologer Stephanie Austin) Sabian symbols for this lunation emphasize the importance of community and cooperation.

The New Capricorn Moon on December 27th marks a time to change our relationship to the physical world. This is a time to re-envision your place in the new world. It’s time to quit focusing on personal nest-feathering and to become involved with community, offering what you can for the good of the whole. “It’s time to get back to the garden. ” (Joni Mitchell)
