Leo
August 1, 2008
In late July, the fiery Lion begins his rule, warming and brightening our hemisphere. The Sun is his lord and Leo shines accordingly, lighting up the zodiac. The Lion’s days are July 23 – August 22. When you compare the power of the Sun with anything else in our Solar System, you see why Leo is considered by most astrologers to be the most powerful of the signs.
Leo is the second fire sign. The spark of life ignited in Aries has grown to its full loving force in this powerful sign of the Lion. Since Leo is ruled by the Sun, it is the most creative of all the signs. Love and fun radiate from the Lion, who loves to entertain. The child is strong in Leo, the life of the party, who brightens the space with its sunshine self.
Because of the commanding power of this sign, many leaders good (Bill Clinton) and bad (Mussolini and Milosevic) are Leos. Because of the Lion’s need for attention and because they glow in the limelight, Leos are often actors, entertainers, and super stars (Mick Jagger, Madonna, Magic Johnson). And because Regulus, the royal star, is in the heart of the Lion, Leos often possess a regal quality, making them the true kings of the human jungle. The bigger-than-life people (Jackie Onassis, Arnold Schwartzenegger) are born here. Presidential hopeful Barack Obama, born August 4,1961, is a Leo.
Love pours forth from the heart of the Lion, making Leo the most loving of the signs. But when Leo’s love is not received or appreciated the Lion wilts and pouts. And many of us get tired of our Leo friends telling us how great they are. The Leo style is big and loud too, sometimes offending the more gentle and conservative amongst us.
Astrologer Nancy Cohen suggests that baby boy Leo didn’t get noticed by Dad, and he is left seeking approval from others. There are the guys that identify with their athletic teams. In Jungian theory, part of the male Leo’s hero’s journey is to restore life to the aging and impotent king. Leo men act this out, rescuing weak fathers. This is the son that must save Dad.
Baby girl Leo was a favorite of Dad’s. She grows up to be a strong and dominating woman, often, however, disappointed in love, never receiving in the amount she gives. Of course, who can shine like the Sun?
It’s probably no surprise that Leo rules the heart, center of love. It also rules the spinal column, center of courage. Leo reminds us that giving and receiving love are the mainstays of a healthy heart and the healers of a broken heart. The Lion gives us the courage to stand up for our convictions, keeping our backs strong.
The major celestial events this month are two eclipses. So be careful with new beginnings unless they are of the creative sort. Eclipses mark significant endings. August 5, 6, 12, and 13 are the best days for purchases and new beginnings, the 7th and the 22nd to a lesser extent. No surgeries on the days around the eclipses: August 1 and August 16. The best days for getting rid of things are August 29 and 30. These days favor inner as well as outer cleansing.
This month’s first New Moon features a powerful solar eclipse on August 1st at the creative degree of Leo 10. Look for exceptional synchronicities, advises astrologer Rose Marcus. She also suggests a great opportunity or significant breakthrough is at hand in personal as well as in socio-political or scientific realms. There is no time like now to discover your creative gift. Those born in the early 40’s and the mid 60’s will have strong hits. This eclipse, suggests astrologer Stephanie Austin, will activate cellular memories of their missions and their fears. Those born in the mid to late 50’s and early 60’s will remember their need to “break from tradition and be an agent of change. ” Besides the Sun and Moon in Leo, Mercury and Venus are also here, amplifying the call to fulfill our creative destinies. Neptune opposes Venus adding inspiration to the mix.
The creative and inspirational vibrations will be fully amped-up by August 16, the Aquarius Lunar Eclipse. Those born in the early 50’s and early 60’s will be affected on cellular levels. Your mission will be in focus now if you are looking. Neptune, planet of ecstasy and insanity, is within 2 degrees of this Full Moon so expect a heavy pay-off from meditation. Creative impulses are especially strong now since the light of the Sun is cut off and we experience only lunar energy. At the same time there is a triple conjunction—Venus, Mercury, and Saturn– in the earthy and service-oriented sign of Virgo, grounding the creative magic. What a mix!
By month’s end, the Sun will be in practical Virgo. There will be a second New Moon this month on August 30 in the sign of the Harvest Goddess. Saturn is close to this lunation making manifestation a strong possibility if you have your ducks in a row. A strong and positive aspect from Jupiter brings good fortune to those ready to receive it.
This is a fitting and timely message from the Abraham material: A man’s success depends on this: how much time does he give to thoughts of joy and how much to thoughts of pain. The universe fully supports us now to follow our bliss.
