Gemini
June 1, 2008
Opening May 20th and on the zodiacal stage until June 20th is Gemini, the sign of the Twins. Gemini is the first of the human signs—the air signs—the first sign of mind. This is the sign of early childhood, where we learn about the world around us. The Twins teach us that we live in a dual world where there are two sides to everything.
.
Geminis are interesting, smart, and generally light-hearted as they skate along the surface of life. Geminis are the intelligent communicators, writers, and net workers of the zodiac. They are the reporters, messengers, interpreters, and linguists. The Twins are able to take in many things at once and live in high awareness of their surroundings. Ruled by Mercury, they are quick thinkers and full of curiosity. And they love to talk.
Astrologer Deborah Houlding suggests “Gemini swings rapidly through the realms of conscious and unconscious and just as rapidly swings back again.” Yes, The Twins are moodier than one might think. And while Mercury rules communication, he is also the god of liars and thieves. Yes, Gemini has two sides. Dr. Jekyll has that other side: Mr. Hyde. And that little girl in the nursery rhyme with the curl in the middle of her forehead must have been a Gemini. Remember, “When she was good, she was very, very good, and when she was bad she was horrid.”
Gemini is the most youthful of the signs. The Gemini man is synonymous with Peter the Pan, the boy who never grew up. Responsibility is a dirty word to the Twins, who want to play first in this sandbox and then in that one. They are scared of commitment, often having one foot out the proverbial door.
Humor lives in Gemini as well as cruelty. This makes sense when you think that humor often involves laughing at other people’s weaknesses and mistakes—that slipping on the banana peel thing. The positive Gemini humor is the interesting turn of phrase, the unexpected and original use of words.
Besides the worlds of knowledge and communication, Gemini also rules brothers and sisters. People with communication issues or writers’ block might look to open channels with siblings. And Gemini rules short distance journeys. Coming and going: another aspect of the Twins.
Geminis love chit-chat, learning, noticing, news, maps, telephones, and cars. Hating boredom, routine is death to a Gemini.
The Gemini areas of the body are the upper respiratory system, shoulders, arms, and lungs. Too much responsibility makes Gemini’s shoulders ache; not enough breathing room gives Gemini a cough. Being around irritating people gives Gemini a sinus infection. Gemini also has a strong connection with the senses, our first learning tools, especially seeing and hearing, because this information comes through two eyes and two ears. Ear and eye problems are often from an unwillingness to hear or see the truth.
The best days for purchases and new beginnings this month are June 12th, 17th, 19th, 20th (am) and the 21st. Since Mercury, ruler of Gemini, is retrograde until June 19, it is best to wait until after then to buy cars or electronics. The 21st especially favors electronics and communal purchases.
Uranus, planet of the unexpected, has stations in Pisces, the sign ruling oil, harshly aspecting the United States Mars. I don’t have to tell you how the aspect is manifesting. The rapid rise in oil prices is undermining our economy. Astrologer Rose Marcus suggests that Pluto’s move back into Sagittarius on June 13th, where it will be for 6 months, is a grace period, a “time to fortify or revamp our vision and to reset the pointer on our inner compass. Many of us can be prompted to uproot and transplant ourselves—hopefully, to higher ground.” Yes, and did I mention, Uranus in Pisces rules hurricanes.
The New Gemini Moon on June 3rd, is the second of five extra powerful lunations this year. Because the moon is very close to the earth, emotions and tides will run stronger than ever. So, in the sign of the changeable Twins, look for sudden shifts in weather and thought. Look for openings for writers, communicators, and brother-sister relationships. Astrologer Stephanie Austin advises us to “be prepared to receive and exchange important insights during the week-end of June 7th and 8th.”
At the time of the Full Moon on June 18th, Mercury stations at the degree of the New Moon. Any change of direction made during the first week of June could come to an unexpectedly rapid manifestation. Pluto is in close aspect to this Full Moon, challenging us to check our facts. Are our beliefs in accord with what is or are we off in the land of wishful thinking. The Sabian symbol for the Sun at this lunation is the bankruptcy symbol. What could be more appropriate?
Once holy man and sage, J. Krishnamurti, was asked by a devotee how could he be at peace in this shifting and dual world. “I don’t mind what happens,” he said. Perhaps it’s time to listen to his wisdom.
Because the moon is emptying the first half of June and Mercury is turning retrograde June 15th, this month is not good time for new beginnings of any kind. Especially after June 14th, don’t buy a car or any electronic equipment. Surgery is not recommend after June 14th. The morning of July 17th is the worst day this month for any new purchases or undertakings. If something must be begun this month, then June 5th is the best day. But beware of over-optimism or too much of anything.
As the month opens, we’re still under the influence of the Full Moon, that Blue Moon, from the end of last month, where shocking events were likely revealed. The New Mon of June 14th is rich in contradiction, already a problem for the Twins, as Pluto opposed the lunation where those unwilling to discard outmoded beliefs might feel squeezed. Astrologer Jeff Jawer says Pluto’s opposition to the Sun and Moon demands focus and decisiveness. Look for power struggles as well. A helpful aspect from Mars, strong now in its own sign of Aries, gives the quick reactions and courage necessary for turning crises into opportunities. This moon brings to light new information regarding mind and matter. Matter is mind, as it turns out. Thought creates.
By month’s end, the Sun will have moved to Cancer, the first water sign, symbolizing the emotional body and the importance of our feelings. On June 30th the moon will oppose this Cancer sun giving us the full Capricorn moon. We are likely to have thoughts now about how well we are nurturing our life goals. Are my ambitions in harmony with my heart? The need to feel our feelings is strong now. Suppressed emotion is stored in the body and will manifest as sickness if ignored. The Capricorn moon demands maturity, rewards efforts, and teaches consequences.
As astrologer Stephanie Austin says, “This Full Moon illuminates our emotional baggage and urges us to unpack it.” If we are willing to do this we can become more of who we really are. “Wisdom tells me I am nothing. Love tells me I am everything. Between these two my life flows.” (Nisargadatta Maharaj)
