Pisces

March 1, 2008

Pisces, the sign of the fish, is the twelfth and final sign of the zodiac. The last day of Pisces is he last day of winter, the closing of the zodiacal year. Pisces also brings us to the end of our spiritual journey, our reunion with creative source. Some call this God.

The hero’s journey begins in Aries as he establishes his individuality. He learns values in Taurus, communication in Gemini and how to feel in Cancer. He creates in Leo, perfects and serves in Virgo, and learns relationship in Libra. In Scorpio he joins deeply with another and in Sagittarius he finds his philosophy and path to God. He finds life purpose and career in Capricorn, friends and higher goals in Aquarius, and then in Pisces he must give it all up, learning there are other realities beyond the physical.

Pisces is the third water sign, symbolic of the ocean, where all individual drops of water join and lose their individuality. This is where life begins and ends. On earth, the boundaries between the Pisces self and others are thin. It is said the Piscean feels the pain of the world and that is true. The fish needs more alone and quiet time than his brothers because of this extreme sensitivity. He needs to replenish himself.

Many consider Pisces to be the highest sign because it rules all things ethereal like music, prayer, fantasy, and unconditional love. Pisces is about letting go and that means dropping the ego, a high and difficult task. Many creative artists and saints are born in Pisces which rules the lighter world of unity and oneness.

Pisces, the highest sign. But wait. There are two fish and they swim in different directions. The second fish swims into the dark world of wantonness and dissolution. Many Pisces natives find it hard to navigate the murky and restless waters where the rules and disciplines of the physical are hard to maintain. These brothers may find themselves in prisons, hospitals, or asylums where others make decisions for them. Or they may find themselves in the wet and depressing world of alcohol or in the jagged reality of drugs. Lacking higher purpose, these fish cannot bring discipline to their lives.

Jesus was born at the beginning of he Piscean Age, just now ending. He is our Piscean avatar, embodying the highest virtues of this sign–compassion, understanding, forgiveness, and unconditional love. The Piscean archetype is also associated with sacrifice as Jesus sacrificed his body to prove eternal live. Often the fish are forced to sacrifice earthly rewards to deepen their inner lives and enrich their souls. Those who resist this letting go will suffer, as many Pisces natives will attest to. They are also often the scapegoats of the world, the misunderstood, he wrongly accused. Serve or suffer is the Piscean mandate.

In the Christian world, Pisces is the Lenten season, a time when we become more aware that our earthly stay is temporary. Many increase their prayer and meditation time during this penitential season. The earth, still barren and muddy, reflects this time of self-imposed deprivation. Symbolically, the death of Jesus coincides with the end of Pisces and his resurrection with the Vernal Equinox, the first day of Spring: new life.

In the body, Pisces rules the feet. Our feet keep us connected to Mother Earth. If we feel ungrounded or without a firm foundation, we will feel it in our feet. Pisces, of course, have extra sensitivity here. The science of reflexology reveals that the soles of the feet have energy connections with the entire body and that stimulating the feet is healing. That’s why it is healthy to go barefooted. And speaking of feet, our Pisces brothers love shoes. And speaking of feet, fish don’t have any ?!?

This month, days for new beginnings are in short supply. The moon is in her last quarter until the 7th, never a time for new starts. And during the increasing moon there are no favorable days before the heavily afflicted Full Moon on March 21st. The afternoon of March 26th and the days of March 30th and 31st are the only good times for major purchases or new beginnings this month. Do not plan a surgery for March 20th or 21st.

This month’s New Moon on March 7th at 18 degrees Pisces continues the eclipse theme of letting go of the past and moving on. Mars and Pluto have just finished the last of three oppositions, marking this a time of a chapter closing which began or began to end last September. Uranus, planet of awakenings, is within one degree of the New Moon, expanding states of consciousness. Uranus is also the planet of revolution and revolutionary thinking. “In the 60’s its cosmic imperative was ‘Question Authority.’ This decade it’s ‘Question Reality.’” (Stephanie Austin) Also joining at this New Moon are Venus and Neptune offering inspired creativity and compassionate love.

The Full Moon this month, just 2 days after the Spring Equinox, receives hard aspects from Mars and Pluto, promising struggle, competition, and compelling force. These dynamic celestial bodies in the cardinal signs of action– Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn–set the stage for fresh starts in four important areas: self, home, relationships, and career. Conflicts must be resolved. The final straw has been placed on more than one camel’s back. Thank goodness, the Sun is now in Aries, the sign of new beginnings, where all things are possible. The resurrections theme is especially powerful this year as Easter follows two days later.

The Sabian symbols for this lunation remind us to lighten our hearts and laugh at our shortcomings. Let the dark past go and energize your new creative self. Drop the need for perfection and remember we are all doing the best we can. “Ring the bells that still can ring/ Forget your perfect offering/ There is a crack in everything/ That’s how the light gets in.” (Leonard Cohen)
