Bridge Over Troubled Borders
March 1, 2008
The monumental sculpture standing in the desert has a broad scope of inspiration and meaning. According to the artist that created it, Neil Bernstein, it is to stand as a memorial to the plight of migrants and as it reaches into the heavens, it serves as a golden talisman of spirituality - yet earth-bound in its function as a beacon and water source for travelers.
The artistic concept was based on Christo’s “The Gates” installation at New York’s Central Park.
The sculpture’s pipe structure will be filled with water and be lit at night to aide migrants.
Bernstein is planning on sending the sculpture across the border to Nogales, Agua Prieta, Juarez and Tijuana to offer the sculpture to persons affected by the border crisis an opportunity to sign, leave mementos and cry on the symbolic “Veil of Tears.” Later it will travel to Washington, D.C.
The permanent home of the sculpture will be where it is presently located - just off Arivaca Road between milepost 9 and 10.
recent attempt to vandalize the sculpture angered many who support the memorial’s concept.
