Leo
August 1, 2007
In late July, the fiery Lion begins his rule, warming and brightening our hemisphere. The Sun is his lord and Leo shines accordingly, lighting up the zodiac. The Lion’s days are July 23 – August 22. Leo is the second sign of fire. The fly wheel initiating fires of Aries have consolidated into the fixed fire of Leo. When you compare the power of the Sun with anything else in our Solar System, you see why Leo is considered by most astrologers to be the most powerful of the signs.
Since Leo is ruled by the Sun, it is the most creative of all the signs. Love and fun radiate from the Lion, who loves to entertain. The child is strong in Leo, the life of the party, who brightens the space with its sunshine self.
Because of the commanding power of this sign, many leaders good (Bill Clinton) and bad (Mussolini and Milosevic) are Leos. Because of the Lion’s need for attention and because they glow in the limelight, Leos are often actors and entertainers (Mick Jagger and Madonna). And because Regulus, the royal star, is in the heart of the Lion, Leos often possess a regal quality, making them the true kings of the human jungle. The bigger-than-life people (Jackie Onassis) are born here.
Love pours forth from the heart of the Lion, making Leo the most loving of the signs. But when Leo’s love is not received or appreciated the Lion wilts and pouts. And many of us get tired of our Leo friends telling us how great they are. The Leo style is big and loud too, sometimes offending the more gentle and conservative amongst us.
Astrologer Nancy Cohen suggests that baby boy Leo didn’t get noticed by Dad, and he is left seeking approval from others. There are the guys that identify with their athletic teams. In Jungian theory, part of the male Leo’s hero’s journey is to restore life to the aging and impotent king. Leo men act this out, rescuing weak fathers. This is the son that must save Dad.
Baby girl Leo was a favorite of Dad’s. She grows up to be a strong and dominating woman, often, however, disappointed in love, never receiving in the amount she gives. Of course, who can shine like the Sun?
It’s probably no surprise that Leo rules the heart, center of love. It also rules the spinal column, center of courage. Leo reminds us that giving and receiving love are the mainstays of a healthy heart and the healers of a broken heart. The Lion gives us the courage to stand up for our convictions, keeping our backs strong.
If you can get those brakes off (Saturn and Mars were just in conflict), August 3rd and the morning of August 4th, before 10:00 a.m., are good days for beginnings. The best day for endings and sales this month is August 11th. This day favors fasting, cleansing, and removals. It’s also good for garage sales, closet cleaning, and letters of apology. August 16th, 17th, and 18th , are favorable for beginnings and purchases, especially those involving beautifying. August 30, 31, and September 1 are among the best days for a fresh start. Avoid purchases, surgeries, and contract signing on August 4 (after 10:00 a.m.), 10, 20, 25, 27, 28, and 29.
The New Leo Moon on August 12th is a time to focus on your special gift. Make an intention to work on your talent and give it to the world. This day, five of ten bodies in our Solar System are in Leo: Sun., Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Saturn. This is the day a star is born. An opposition from Neptune adds glamour and fantasy to the picture. Astrologer Stephanie Austin noticed that under the long opposition between Saturn in Leo and Neptune in Aquarius a movie (Neptune) was made about the Laws of Manifestation (Saturn). The movie shared a special power (Leo) with the masses (Aquarius). The movie is The Secret.
By month’s end, the Sun will be in practical Virgo. The Pisces Moon will oppose the Sun on August 28th, giving us this month’s Full Pisces Moon, the dreamer’s moon, the harvest moon. This is the largest of the Full Moons, giving workers enough moonlight for picking crops at night.
This year, this Full Moon is a Lunar Eclipse. For one thing, eclipses are about finishing things. And with Saturn moving into Virgo this same week, there is an echoing message of letting go of impossible dreams and getting down to the practical application of what is possible. A Virgo-Pisces polarity highlights the concepts of the dream and practicality, the general and the specific, and unity and compartments. This eclipse says it’s time to bring the dream to earth. It’s time to get busy. An opposition between Mercury and Uranus the same day brings lightening insights about what to do. It’s time to get to work, but don’t forget to have fun. Remember what we learned from The Secret; feeling good is more important than anything.
