Cancer

July 1, 2007

The year’s longest day, the first day of summer, is the opening day of Cancer, the Crab. In Cancer (June 21 - July 22) we enter the emotional realm of the first water sign. This is the sign of the mother who nurtures and protects new, vulnerable life. The fourth sign, the sign at the bottom of the circle, is the realm of our ancestors, our roots. This powerful, angular sign addresses the importance of home, family, and comfortable surroundings. Cancer is our mother land and, of course, our Mother Earth.

The Moon is Cancer’s ruling planet. Forever waxing and waning, the changeable Moon is the appropriate ruler of this emotional and moody sign. Cancer is the most feminine of the signs. Cancer natives are soft on the inside though you may not notice because, like their totem Crab, their exteriors are hard. Those born when the Crab is on the eastern horizon often look like the Crab, having moon faces, long arms and legs, and large hands and feet.

The Moon children have strong intuition, almost a sixth sense. Many psychics are strong in Cancer as water is the most receptive of the elements. A highly protective sign, Cancer is loyal to its own. A sign deeply linked to the past, Cancer likes history and antiques. The Cancer in your family is the best choice for the keeper of the family tree. Being a nurturing energy, Cancer likes to cook and to feed others. Cancer rules the beginning and the end of life as well as the vulnerable, so it is the natural realm of babies and old people.

In the body, Cancer rules the vulnerable and nurturing parts: the stomach and the breasts. Cancers are prone to digestive problems. Their oversensitivity makes them unable to “stomach” situations that don’t bother their tougher brothers. The Crab can become bloated if he doesn’t feel his feelings.

Shadow Cancer is the pouter who takes things personally, the scaredy-cat, insecure and overly cautious, and the hoarding packrat. Gluttony is a Cancer problem as well as bigoted nationalism. The devouring mother archetype is dark Cancer.

Many little Cancers were born to mothers who were too young or inexperienced to nurture them. These are the children who mothered their mothers. Now they give to others in order to get something back. These people need to learn to nurture themselves.

Countries also have charts, and our country, born on the fourth of July, is a Crab. We are mothering, territorial, and emotionally immature. Americans love their homes, their flag, their apple pie–all ruled by Cancer. Big Jupiter, the expander, is close to our Cancer Sun, the celestial markings for obesity, over-mothering, and the super-sizing of everything. With the large number of entitlement programs here in America, a mother sow with many teats is an apt metaphor.

The progressed chart of the United States shows 2008 to be the year a woman could be president as the feminine Pisces Moon makes a beautiful aspect to our Cancer (very feminine) Sun. Hillary has a Pisces Moon.
George W. Bush, born July 6th, is a Cancer and a true American son. And as that son, he is manifesting one of Cancer America’s shadow: imperialism, the mothering of the world. Homeland and security are both Cancer words. The fencing of America is a Cancer concept.

The best days for new beginnings this month are after July 15th. Mercury, the planet of communication, is moving forward now and the Moon in the evening sky. It’s time to set sail. The morning of July 15th is particularly good for new starts and major purchases as is July 20th and July 21st. July 26th is good for making long-term investments, especially those involving some kind of transformation. July12th and 13th are the best days for removals of any kind. Surgery is not recommended for July 14th, the morning of July 24th, nor during the days of the Full Moon, July 28th, 29th and 30th.

The New Cancer Moon on July 14th is a day for meditation. Since Cancer is the most feminine sign, going inside and going deep will yield results. As water is the most receptive energy, our access to Spirit is greatest now. Where am I in need of nurturing? How can I nurture others? Ask now to know your truth.
Stephanie Austin reminds us that, “In the beginning was the Word, but also the Mother, the Cosmic Womb from which all life springs.” This is a time to honor your mother, Mother Earth, and the receptive feminine principle in all life. Pluto is very close to Galactic Center at this lunation (exact on July 17th) so listen for cosmic messages. You will know you’re receiving one if the top of your head tingles.

Before month’s end, the Sun will be in fiery Leo. The Moon in Aquarius will oppose on July 29th, this month’s Full Moon day. This lunation is a call for each of us to be true to who we are and to honor the uniqueness of each of us. We’re all special and we’re all the same. This is the message of the Full Aquarian Moon: know thyself and love one another.
