Barbara Stockwell’s 50 Years in Arivaca

July 1, 2007

It would be hard to imagine Arivaca without Barbara Stockwell. At least, I can’t. She first came here 50 years ago, on the Fourth of July 1957. Her parents, Bob and Mary Marshall, had come down to Arivaca to open a café. Barbara had just finished her freshman year at ASU in Tempe and came to visit them.

Cancer

July 1, 2007

The year’s longest day, the first day of summer, is the opening day of Cancer, the Crab. In Cancer (June 21 - July 22) we enter the emotional realm of the first water sign. This is the sign of the mother who nurtures and protects new, vulnerable life. The fourth sign, the sign at the bottom of the circle, is the realm of our ancestors, our roots. This powerful, angular sign addresses the importance of home, family, and comfortable surroundings. Cancer is our mother land and, of course, our Mother Earth.

Border Issues

I recently served on a committee to study the establishment of a permanent checkpoint on I-19. I experienced this responsibility as urgent and critical as did all the others on the committee. Although we did not agree on the virtues of the checkpoint, our common ground was that we all wanted to help secure the border and keep our neighborhoods safe.
